Logarithmic quasi-homothetic preferences

چکیده

We study a class of symmetric, quasi-homothetic preferences that result in demands logarithmic in own prices when these have a negligible impact on aggregate price indices (as in monopolistic competition models). Thus marginal revenues are computationally friendly, and decreasing whenever demands are elastic. Preferences can be represented either by an additive negative exponential direct utility function, or by an expenditure function which depends on two price indices. A parameter accounts for any number of commodities. Another one affects the relevant demand elasticities, which are not constant. Commodities can be either substitutes or complements according to the size of consumption. J.E.L. Classification: D1, D2.

Trade , Non - Homothetic Preferences , and the Impact of Country Size on Wages ∗

We study the impact of country size on wages in a two-country trade model with monopolistic competition and non-homothetic preferences. Since there is renewed interest in nonhomothetic preferences and variable markups, we revisit standard results on wages obtained using homothetic (CES) preferences. The standard results are that, under free trade, wages are equal and that, with iceberg costs, t...

Biased Quantitative Measurement of Interval Ordered Homothetic Preferences

We represent interval ordered homothetic preferences with a quantitative homothetic utility function and a multiplicative bias. When preferences are weakly ordered (i.e. when indifference is transitive), such a bias equals 1. When indifference is intransitive, the biasing factor is a positive function smaller than 1 and measures a threshold of indifference. We show that the bias is constant if ...

Extended linear-homothetic preferences and the Cournot-Bertrand profit differential∗

This paper introduces the ‘extended linear-homothetic’ preferences to model consumer choice. Specifically, we extend Datta and Dixon’s (2000) ‘standard linear-homothetic’ preferences by adding an additional term to the unit cost function. This term captures the relative importance of price interactions within sectors on the unit cost of utility. In an economy composed of a large number of secto...

Algebraic Theory of Pareto Efficient Exchange

We study pure exchange economies with symmetries on preferences up to taste intensity transformations. In a 2-person, 2-good endowment economy, we show that bilateral symmetry on each utility functional precludes a rectangle in the Edgeworth box as the location of Pareto optimal allocations. Under strictly quasi-concave preferences, a larger set can be ruled out. The inadmissible region is stil...

Representation of homothetic forward performance processes via ergodic and infinite horizon quadratic BSDE in stochastic factor models∗

In an incomplete market, with incompleteness stemming from stochastic factors imperfectly correlated with the underlying stocks, we derive representations of homothetic forward investment performance processes (power, exponential and logarithmic). We develop a connection with ergodic and infinite horizon quadratic BSDE, and with a risk-sensitive control problem. We also develop a connection, fo...
